60 Foreign Security Experts Flee Somalia After Massive E-Visa Data Breach

Mogadishu,Somalia-According to the report seen by Telegaraf, 60 foreign experts working in intelligence and security affairs left the country within 24 hours after the US Embassy in Somalia said that the E-visa was hacked.

The US said that the hackers who hacked the E-visa released information including

the applicants’ names, photographs, dates and places of birth, emails, marital status, and home addresses.

The main reason for the foreign experts, who worked for security agencies, intelligence, consulting for foreign governments, and security projects, to leave the country was said to be their fear that they were among those whose data was hacked, as the US Embassy in Somalia said that anyone who applied for an E-visa is at risk of security.

An official speaking to local media quoted by the newspaper said that some foreigners who had left the country had received reports proving that their photos, names and addresses were among the hacked data published on the Internet.

This led to emergency flights departing from Mogadishu, Kismayo, Garowe, Hargeisa and Baidoa.

Meanwhile, the report notes that foreign embassies have stopped using e-visas.

According to sources close to diplomatic missions, several embassies in Somalia have told Somali counterparts that they will no longer use the government’s e-visa system, warning that it is not sufficiently secure.

The security incident comes as the country faces political tension between the federal government and regional states such as Puntland and Jubbaland, which are concerned about the central government’s attempts to amend the constitution. Other opposition groups have also increased pressure, and a growing number of groups are preparing for a political uprising.
