Ethio Djibouti Railway Launches Passenger Service, Requires National ID

Djabuti,The Ethio Djibouti Railway (EDR) Share Company will begin offering public passenger train services starting in February 2025, according to CEO Takele Uma.

“We are delighted to inform you that the Ethio Djibouti Railway (EDR) Share Company will be commencing public passenger transport services via train on our online booking platform starting in February 2025,” Takele wrote in his Facebook page.

The railway, which connects Djibouti’s port to the Ethiopian capital, has primarily been used for freight transport since its inception.

To ensure a “seamless and efficient travel experience,” EDR is making it mandatory for all passengers to present a valid National ID (Fayida) for both online booking and travel, according to Takele.

“This is essential for ensuring accurate passenger information and facilitating a hassle-free journey,” Uma said.

The EDR’s online booking platform is set to launch in the coming weeks, allowing travelers to plan and secure their train tickets in advance.

The move to add passenger services comes as Ethiopia and Djibouti work to foster economic growth in the region. The railway is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing mobility and transforming the public transportation landscape.
