Kenyan–U.S. Dual Citizen, U.S. Army Sergeant Arrested at Tanzanian Border With Explosives

Sarira,Tanzania-Tanzanian authorities have arrested a Kenyan–U.S. dual citizen and U.S. Army sergeant after he allegedly attempted to enter the country with explosive devices at the Sirari border crossing.

In a statement released late Sunday, the Tanzania Police Force confirmed that the 30-year-old suspect was apprehended around noon on Sunday, November 16, by officers in the Tarime–Rorya region.

According to police, the man—identified as a serving member of the United States Army holding the rank of Sergeant—was traveling in a Toyota Land Cruiser from Kenya when security personnel discovered four CS M68 hand grenades in his possession.

A dual citizen of the United States and Kenya, a United States Army Soldier…with four CS M68 hand grenades, coming from Kenya to enter Tanzania using a Toyota Land Cruiser,” the official statement read.

Police emphasized that Tanzanian law strictly prohibits the importation of such weapons, even with advance permission.
According to the Arms Ownership Law, even if he asked for permission, he would not be allowed to enter the country with the bombs,” authorities noted.

The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue. Officials say he is being questioned to determine the origin of the explosives, his intent, and whether additional parties may be involved. Police promise that appropriate legal action will follow once inquiries are complete.

The incident has raised security concerns along the Kenya–Tanzania border, where regional authorities have been working to curb illegal arms trafficking and cross-border criminal activity.
