Minister Fiqi Rejects Reports of Ethiopian Red Sea Agreement, Emphasizes Sovereignty

Mogadishu Somalia-  Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Mo’alim Fiqi, has strongly refuted claims that the Ethiopian government has agreed to grant access to the Red Sea, describing the reports as baseless and misleading. In an exclusive interview with the Telegaraf  Minister Fiqi clarified the situation, emphasizing that such rumors were false and aimed at sowing confusion among the public.

Minister Fiqi explained that while technical committees are scheduled to meet in February 2025 to discuss various issues, it is crucial to note that before any discussions can take place, Ethiopia must adhere to the principles outlined in the Ankara Agreement. The Somali Foreign Minister underscored that the preservation of Somalia’s sovereignty and independence is a top priority for his government. He called on Ethiopia to stop interfering in Somalia’s internal affairs, urging the country to respect Somalia’s autonomy in all aspects of governance.

The Minister’s comments come at a time when there has been growing speculation about the status of the Red Sea and its access, leading to widespread confusion. However, Fiqi made it clear that the Somali government remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the independence and dignity of the Somali people, rejecting any attempts to undermine the country’s sovereignty. He stressed that the dissemination of false information serves only to confuse the public and create unnecessary uncertainty.

Minister Fiqi went on to explain that the Somali government is fully dedicated to ensuring the stability and prosperity of the region. He emphasized the importance of fostering cooperation among neighboring nations in order to promote economic growth, security, and peace across the Horn of Africa. The Minister highlighted that Somalia’s leadership is focused on bringing the people of the region together to overcome shared challenges and achieve sustainable development.
