Saudi Arabia is actively seeking to mediate the rising tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea, which are inching closer to the brink of military conflict. The Saudi government, concerned about the potential impact on the strategically important Red Sea region, is working to prevent the escalation of hostilities.
In a significant diplomatic development, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki sent a message to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, according to a statement from Eritrea’s Ministry of Information released on Monday. The message, delivered by Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh, was handed over to Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah. The communiqué was directed toward Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz.
During the meeting, Saleh and Prince Faisal reportedly discussed several “key issues of mutual interest” and addressed various bilateral matters, although further details of the talks have not been disclosed.
The tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea, particularly in the Horn of Africa region, have intensified in recent weeks, raising concerns about the stability of the Red Sea area. These developments are exacerbated by the increasingly strained relations between the two nations, which had a history of border conflict before a fragile peace agreement was reached in 2018. Military figures, including General Abebe Tekehaymanot, a former senior commander of the Ethiopian Defense Force, have expressed concerns that war between the two countries may be inevitable.
Observers believe that Saudi Arabia’s intervention could become crucial if a full-scale war erupts between Ethiopia and Eritrea. As the situation evolves, the international community will be closely watching the Kingdom’s efforts to prevent further escalation and ensure peace in the region.
