Somali Prime Minister and Electoral Commission Discuss Key Steps for National Elections

Mogadishu, Somalia – Today, the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hamsa Abdi Barre, held a crucial meeting with the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission (INEBC). The meeting centered on the progress of Somalia’s electoral reform and the upcoming general elections.

During the session, Prime Minister Barre reaffirmed the Somali government’s strong commitment to conducting one-person, one-vote elections, a key step toward empowering the Somali people to elect their leaders. He stressed that the government is determined to return the power of election directly to the people, marking a significant milestone in the country’s democratic transition.

Prime Minister Barre urged the INEBC to expedite the process of implementing the elections. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the elections are conducted in a transparent, fair, and credible manner, especially since the Somali Parliament has already completed the necessary enabling legislation for the electoral process.

The Chairman of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Mr. Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, also addressed the press after the meeting, outlining the commission’s plans. He assured the public that the commission is working diligently to speed up the electoral process, with a special focus on both federal and regional elections.

Chairman Hassan further expressed confidence that the commission would present a comprehensive and inclusive plan for the elections, one that would reflect the aspirations of the Somali people and make the country proud.
