Somalia’s Largest Hospital Inaugurated in Mogadishu, Offering Advanced Medical Care

Mogadishu, Somalia – The largest hospital in Somalia was officially inaugurated today in the capital, Mogadishu, marking a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare landscape. The new facility, Hodan Hospital, aims to meet the increasing medical needs of the Somali community, who have traditionally sought treatment abroad.

Mohamed Issaaq, the General Manager of Hodan Hospital, highlighted the hospital’s unique offerings, explaining that it provides advanced medical procedures that were previously unavailable in Somalia. “This hospital is different from others,” Issaaq said. “It offers surgeries, including cancer treatments and organ replacements, such as heart and liver transplants, which have not been performed in Somalia until now.”

Jabriil Qaarey, the manager of Premier Bank, a key investor in the project, spoke at the opening ceremony and emphasized the importance of homegrown investment in the nation’s development. “Having been to 45 countries across Africa, I’ve seen that most major investments are either foreign-owned or government-run,” Qaarey noted. “It’s crucial for Somalia to have local companies investing in essential sectors like healthcare, telecommunications, banking, and hospitality.”

The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, also attended the opening, expressing his support for the initiative. “This hospital is a vital addition to our healthcare system,” he said. “It reflects the aspirations of our young people who are driving forward critical projects that benefit the entire nation.”

With more than 200 beds and numerous emergency departments, Hodan Hospital is poised to serve as a cornerstone of Somalia’s healthcare sector, offering both advanced medical care and a much-needed alternative to seeking treatment abroad.
