Kenyan Lawmakers Want President’s Term Extended to Seven Years

Nairobi,Kenya:  Kenyan lawmakers have introduced a bill proposing amendments to the nation’s constitution that would extend the terms of both the president and members of parliament from five years to seven years. This proposal, which was first read in the Senate on September 26, 2024, is currently under review by a committee. As part of the legislative process, the public has been invited to provide feedback on the bill, as outlined in a notice published in the Daily Nation newspaper.

The bill is a significant development in Kenya’s political landscape, as it could potentially alter the election cycle and tenure of elected officials. However, any constitutional changes would require broad support, both within the government and among the public, and could involve a national referendum depending on the extent of the amendments.

Public opinion and the committee’s recommendations will play crucial roles in determining the future of this proposal.
