Federal Cabinet Takes Legal Action Against Jubbaland Election Violations

Mogadishu- The Cabinet of Ministers of the Somali Federal Government convened an emergency meeting to address the controversial election held in Kismayo earlier today, where Ahmed Madobe was re-elected as President of Jubbaland for an unprecedented third term. The government announced firm measures to counter what it described as an unlawful process, instructing the Attorney General to file a case before the Supreme Court.

Government spokesman Farhan Mohamed Jimale presented the Cabinet’s resolution, highlighting three critical points of contention surrounding the election. The resolution declared both the election of the President and the formation of the third Jubbaland Parliament as violations of Somali law.

The statement emphasized that the Jubbaland Constitution explicitly prohibits any individual from serving more than two terms as president. Ahmed Madobe’s re-election for a third term was described as unconstitutional and a direct affront to the rule of law.

“The Council of Ministers instructs the Attorney General of the Federal Government of Somalia to act immediately before the Supreme Court of the country against all the illegal steps taken by Ahmed Madobe,” the resolution read.

The resolution, unanimously approved by the Cabinet, was signed into effect by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who chaired the emergency meeting. The move underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to challenging what it perceives as illegal actions undermining Somalia’s governance and constitutional framework.

Ahmed Madobe, a prominent and polarizing figure in Somali politics, has been at the helm of Jubbaland since 2013. His leadership has often been contested by the Federal Government, reflecting broader tensions over federalism and the distribution of power in Somalia.

This development sets the stage for a potential legal showdown in Somalia’s Supreme Court and further intensifies the political dispute between the Federal Government and Jubbaland’s leadership.
