Gedo and Sool Targeted in Federal Government’s Political Restructuring

Mogadishu,SomaliaThe Somali government is planning to establish new administrations in areas bordering the rival regional states of Puntland and Jubbaland. This initiative, designed by President Hassan Sheikh and implemented by Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre, is currently underway in the cities of Laascaanood (in the Sool region) and Baladxaawo (in the Gedo region).

Why are these new administrations being created?

The goal is to conduct elections in these regions, which have opposed the Puntland and Jubbaland administrations—both of which claim authority over the areas where the new administrations are being set up.

The government has decided to form a new Jubbaland administration in the Gedo region to organize the upcoming elections there. This follows recent fighting in the area, after which the federal government took control of the region. The broader plan is to isolate Ahmed Madobe in Kismayo. His administration will no longer be recognized, and he will instead take part in central government meetings alongside representatives from the newly established administration in Gedo.

In the northeast, a similar process is taking place in Laascaanood, where a new president will soon be elected. This new administration will become one of the federal member states aligned with the central government.

President Hassan Sheikh plans to convene all regional administrations in September, including Jubbaland (now based in Gedo), Southwest, Hirshabelle, Galmudug, the Northeast administration, and Banadir Region. At that meeting, he will present his political vision to transition the country to a one-person, one-vote electoral system. If successful, this plan would diminish the influence of both Ahmed Madobe and Said Deni.
